A passionate fan initiative, "Berserk: The Black Swordsman," emerges, aiming to animate the cherished Berserk tales with the authentic 2D animation.
Berserk, the illustrious manga series by the late Kentaro Miura, has profoundly influenced various games and TV series over the years. Despite its widespread acclaim and impact, it has yet to receive an anime adaptation that genuinely pays homage to its legacy. The fan initiative, "Berserk: The Black Swordsman," has been unveiled through a teaser, aspiring to animate the adored Berserk narratives in the authentic 2D animation style they rightfully deserve.
Berserk has witnessed three distinct efforts by different studios to translate the manga into the anime realm. Studio OLM first animated the series in 1997, but it concluded abruptly after only 25 episodes, leaving numerous questions lingering. In 2012, Studio 4C introduced a film trilogy, "Berserk Golden Age Arc," which combined 2D and 3D CGI to portray the Golden Age arc, akin to the 1999 series. However, it too fell short of doing justice to the iconic manga, excluding many pivotal scenes. The most recent adaptation attempt came in 2016, when studios GEMBA and Millepensee utilized full 3D CGI to produce two seasons, each consisting of 12 episodes, which, due to the use of 3D CGI, is the least favored adaptation among Berserk enthusiasts.
The fan project, “Berserk: The Black Swordsman,” was announced by Studio Eclypse, with the objective to deliver a proper 2D adaptation of the overlooked stories in the anime, commencing from the start. Studio Eclypse, a newly established entity formed by fans eager to create a fan-made anime based on Attack on Titan no Requiem, has now also undertaken the task of crafting a fan-made Berserk anime. For this endeavor, Studio Eclypse has collaborated with Mark Rymer, a renowned YouTuber who animates various manga panels.
The paramount question now is: when can we anticipate seeing “Berserk: The Black Swordsman”? At present, no release date has been declared. Considering that this project is being executed by fans without official funding, it might be a while before we receive further updates. Another pertinent question pertains to its legality. While many anime franchises permit independent creators to monetize their fan-made works, the situation with Berserk remains ambiguous. Monetizing fan works elevates the legal risk and is more likely to attract the scrutiny of copyright holders.
