Shenmue's Anime Adaptation Finally Gets A Trailer
Yes, you read that right. Shenmue is getting another anime adaptation, and we finally got our first trailer at New York Comic Con. Crunchyroll and Adult Swim are adapting the series in a joint collaboration and the anime is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
Shenmue The Animation is the adaptation of the first Shenmue game released on the legendary Dreamcast in 1999. Yu Suzuki, the game developer and the creator of Shenmue, shared that he is directly involved in the anime adaptation at the New York Panel. And also discussed how they will be adapting the immersive world of Shenmue into a linear, 13 episode storyline.
Shenmue follows the story of Ryo Hazuki, who is on a long journey to avenge the murder of his father. The new trailer showed sneak peeks into the old world. Where we got to see the sword that led to a family secret, a fight with the eternal rival Gui Zhang along with the iconic dragons, phoenix mirrors, and more. Shenmue The Animation is an adaptation of the first Shenmue game, which is based in 1986 Yokosuka and will surprisingly expand on elements previously not seen in the main game. We finally may get to see the story behind Ryo's scar and explore many other such elements that may get revealed in the new adaptation.
While the anime is based on a very old, slow-burner revenge story, Yu Suzuki exclaimed that Shenmue The Animation will be 'more accessible, and can be enjoyed by small children'.
